Our focus. Recent engagements.
Our overall focus is on high technology growth businesses. Recent
engagements have been in fields such as life sciences, communications, cleantech,
homeland security, and applications of photonics & small-tech.
Ongoing market research activities
We have an ongoing research activity investigating markets we believe will be promising loci of future innovation. This helps us to offer deep industry insight, and enables us to be productive immediately when we work in those markets. We specialize in markets/industries in which things are changing
rapidly, or new disruptive technologies are emerging and creating
turmoil.
The communications industry is one such example, where
the traditional distinctions between datacom, telecom and the
cable industry are vanishing; bandwidth usage by end users continues
to grow rapidly; powerful forces are backing the convergence of
communications, computing and content; and diverse technologies
(such as photonics, xDSL and various flavors of wireless) are
competing to be the future access technology of choice.
The cleantech industry is another example, in which a confluence of circumstances has unleashed an unprecedented concentration of capital and intellectual creativity, focused on creating new technology and new business models that can reduce global carbon footprints, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. In this same grouping, although not as yet quite so fashionable, we include businesses targeting the need for inexpensive sources of clean, drinkable water.
The healthcare industry is a third example, in which technological
advances have made possible the development of very powerful new
personalized diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities; there exists
a regulatory environment, designed to avoid unnecessary risk,
which acts as a brake on the rate of adoption of new technology;
and there are powerful socioeconomic forces acting to try and reduce the
growth rate of healthcare costs, and in the process threatening
to eliminate the profits that have historically attracted investment
to the industry.
Technologies we follow
Because many companies view the world through the lens of a specific technology, we have a watching brief on specific technological fields as well as on specific markets. We spend time thinking about the full range of possible product categories, in all industries, that might be impacted by those technologies. Examples include a variety of cleantech technologies; nanotechnology & MEMS; photonics; and the convergence of silicon, micro-machining and biotech as a platform for healthcare devices.
So, as an example, we have worked a great deal for companies
that see themselves as being in the photonics industry. In that
case, the focus of our work has not only been on thinking deeply
about applications of photonics in, say, the communications industry. We have also focused on looking broadly at applications of a company's
photonics technology in fields such as industrial lighting, automobile
lighting and automobile databuses, medical diagnostics, data storage,
and digital photography.
